Copper Wall Water Fountains: Appreciating the Legacies Of Antiquity

The term fountain is constructed after the Latin term fons or fontis which means a source or spring. Water fountains have a rich history, dating back from thousands of years ago. Originally, these water features were used to supply drinking and bathing water for citizens, and from there they evolved into ornamental pieces used to beautify different indoor and outdoor spaces. Despite the design and function changes of indoor fountains, they remain as one of history’s most appealing legacies that never fail to captivate human interest.

As far back as third millennium B.C., water fountains were used in Mesopotamia or modern day Iraq. However, as their water sources were way above their cities’ locations, they needed fountains to properly supply the drinking and bathe water needs of their citizens. As Romans are often looked up to for their advanced engineering and water systems, it is not a surprise to know that they are also responsible for the advancements in the art and technology of fountain designs. In fact, they placed several free-standing fountains as well as wall water fountain along their city streets.

By the time the Renaissance and Baroque ages took over, the use of wall water fountain and any other fountains rapidly spread across Europe and other nearby continents. It was during those periods when the functions of fountains dramatically transformed from mere drinking and bathe water reservoirs into luxurious interior and exterior furnishings. It was then that fountains became expressions of art as seen from the allegorical figures that they were designed after. Sculptures became the principal elements of fountain designs in the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

When the 20th century began, fountains were liberated from their drinking and bathing water supply responsibilities. The 20th century also saw the rise of new fountain materials and technologies. From the once all-rock design of fountains, you can now see copper fountain designs that have amplified music and jets of water controlled computer program. Basically, the innovations in technology allow the introduction of a whole new profusion of fountain designs.

Water fountains are essential water features that benefited humans throughout history. It cannot be denied that they are among history’s finest legacies. Aside from their decorative purposes however, fountains today are more appreciated for their healthy benefits. With this ability, it is no wonder that many home and establishment owners utilize such water features inside their spaces.
